Finishing college is an exciting time, but it can also be very stressful. Now that you’ve proven that you can get through higher education alive, it’s time to prove whether or not you can make it in the real world. Not only that, but you have to make sure you can find a job that will justify the amount of money spent on your education. If you’re unsure how to even get started with the application process, here is how to land your dream job after graduating from college.
- Get your resume out as soon as possible.
If you really want to be sure that there will be a decent job available to you when you graduate, then you have to be ahead of the curve and apply to all relevant jobs as soon as they are posted. If you have completed an internship during your time in college, then you’re already a step ahead. Now you want to make sure that your resume gets looked at before everyone else’s, because nothing sets a poor precedent like a straggling resume.
- Talk to your professors about providing a good reference.
Whether you studied fashion at FIDM or graduated from Maryville’s doctor of nursing practice program, you want to be sure that you can demonstrate your skills and show what strong relationships you developed with your professors. There is no proof more solid than a glowing letter of reference from a professor with a great reputation in the field you are studying
- Do your research before walking into your interview.
When you sit down for an interview, you want to know ahead of time with whom you will be speaking and what they are looking for in an employee. You should also research the history of the company, a bit about their current business model and current goals, and, above all, you should be able to tell them how you can be a vital asset in their pursuit of those goals.
- Dress, speak and act the part.
When you go to an interview, appearance is everything. It’s only natural that you will be a bit nervous, but you want to look like you have it together and don’t come off as stressed, nervous or anxious. Also, be sure that you are dressed in nice clothes that fit well – the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable in what you are wearing because that added distraction will come through.
When interviewing, you also want to demonstrate strength of knowledge of the industry for which you are applying. Use plenty of technical jargon and buzzwords that is particular to your field and stay away from conversations about your personal life.
- Apply with multiple businesses that are in direct competition.
If you want to increase your chances of landing a great job with a decent salary, then you have to keep your options open and apply to several different businesses. Don’t be afraid to tell your interviewer that you are speaking with other firms in the same field; this will give them the impression that you are a highly desirable candidate and they need to compete for your favor.
