Winter, wind and low humidity levels can really damage and dry out your skin, particularly when you use heaters. How can you improve dry skin and keep skin healthy and moist this winter.
1. Moisturize your Skin as much as possible!
Find oil based moisturizing ointment instead of water-based. The oil creates protective layer on skin and retains moisture more than a lotion or cream. It is best to choose natural skincare products or nourish your skin with natural oils, like avocado, almond, jojoba or coconut oil. Also look for lotions that contain humectants, a substance that attract more moisture to skin, like glycerin.
Always check ingredient label; fragrances and preservatives that include ingredients like quaternium-15, propylene glycol andimidazolidinyl urea can dry your skin and irritate a sensitive skin, may cause Vitiligo. Also stop using antibacterial and perfumed soaps, deodorant bars, and skin care products that contain alcohol, such hand sanitizers, that can strip oils from your skin.
2. Protect Skin while you go Outside
This is the major issue, David Paltrow in Vitiligo Miracle Program said, It is necessary to protect your skin even on a snowy or cloudy day.. Snow reflects more than water! Use a natural lip balm and sunscreen. Our lips don’t have oil glands; therefore they can dry quickly and cause chapped lips. Also wear gloves and scarf to avoid chapped hands and lips.
3. Avoid Superhot Baths and Showers
Hot water removes natural oils from skin more quickly than cold or lukewarm water. Limit showers to 5 minutes and using warm water instead of hot. A lukewarm water bath with baking soda or oatmeal can relieve dry and itchy skin. After washing skin, moisture it immediately with oil can help you to trap the water in the skin.
4. Drink more Herbal Tea or Water to avoid Dehydration
Our skin is usually an outer reflection of our inner condition. For keeping the body hydrated, drink water is principal. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and all types of diuretics. Eating foods rich in fluid like soups, vegetables and fruits and drinking herbal tea is also good.
5. Do not Overheat your Office Home or Office
Space heater and central heating systems draw moisture from air and skin as well. Keep internal temperature below 72° F. Use a humidifier, particularly in bedrooms, to keep your skin well hydrated while you sleep.
All above mentioned skincare tips can help your dry skin, but some dry skin cases must be seen by a dermatologist or doctor, particularly for worst symptoms of vitiligo. There are some internal issues that cause dry skin, such as genetics, overall health, and medical conditions like allergies, asthma, dermatitis, psoriasis or eczema.
